Lamentations 4: 2, 9,11,13,and 22 Distress of Zion Described

The precious sons of Zion, weighed against fine gold, now they are regarded as earthen jars which is the work of potter's hands! Better are those slain with the sword than those slain with hunger.
The Lord has accomplished his wrath and he has poured out his fierce anger, and he has kindled a fire in Zion which has consumed its foundations. This is because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests who have shed in her midst the blood of the righteous. The punishment of your iniquity has been completed, O daughter of Zion. He will exile you no longer, but he will punish your iniquity,O daughter of Edom, and will expose your sins.

Judah and Jerusalem were in captivity for a period of seventy years, which is the number of years that they did not give the land Sabboth rest. Israel decends from their father Jacob, but his brother who is Essau is the father of Edom. The Edomites would always rejoice and the hardship of the sons of Jacob and this displeases God and he would never let their pride go unpunished.
As for Israel, God places special responsibility on priests and prophets. Priests are to act for the benefit of the people in God's name. The prophets were to speak to the people in God's name.
Instead, the prophets were speaking what was tingling to the ears of the people and the priests were exalting themselves over the people and not representing God. Thus the heavy hand of God's judgment.

Daily Prayer: Father, the sin that dwells within us is like a sickness without a cure. Even though it makes good sense to obey you, we don't seem to be able to. Thank you for sending your son to obey you as one ought, and offer himself as a once and for all sacrifice for our sins. Now he is my Lord and Savior. In Jesus name I pray Amen.
