Matthew 9:16-17 The New Covenant Foretold

But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

In Jesus’ time, wine was stored in goat skins. As new wine fermented, it would expand the leather of the vat. Jesus was making a comparison between His gospel message and the Law of Moses. He is saying that he did not come into the world to fix the old system of Judaism based on rigid laws, but to bring in a new thing. By and through him, he is bringing forgiveness of sins and reconciling the world to God so that He may dwell among them.

Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, bring me into Your kingdom, one which is upheld through faith. Save me and my house from our sins so that we may dwell in the house of the Lord forever. In Jesus name I pray Amen.
