Nahum 2: 13 The overthrow of Nineveh

"Behold, I am against you," declares the Lord of hosts. "I will burn up her chariots in smoke, a sword will devour your young lions; I will cut off your prey from the land, and no longer will the voice of your messengers be heard."

In the year 612 B.C. the doom of the city arrived. Combined armies of Babylonians and Scythians marched up the left bank of the Tigris River and surrounded the city. It happened in the early spring at the time of the annual rainfalls. Since the rains were especially hard that year, the Tigris and other rivers flooded and the apparently washed away portions of the walls, leaving a breach for the armies to enter the city. Sardanapulas, remembering the oracle to the effect that Nineveh would only fall when the river itself declared war against it, believed that the oracle was fulfilled and abandoned any hope of saving himself. There was unparalleled looting. For centuries the wealth of the ancient world had been pouring into Nineveh as a result of the Assyrian conquests. Now it poured out. It is a terrible thing when the God of the universe is against you. He speaks those who sin against him no matter where they live. Yet God tells us to turn from our sin and repent and find salvation in Jesus Christ our Savior.

Daily Prayer: Holy Father, we need to know how utterly sinful sin really is. Let our minds be alert and our hearts understand that we need to take refuge in the Son and turn to him for forgiveness and eternal life while grace is offered this sinful world. Convince and convict us of this today. In Jesus name I pray Amen.
