Habakkuk 1: 1-2, 13 Why does God look at the treacherous?

The oracle which Habakkuk the prophet saw. How long, O Lord, will I call for help, and you will not hear? I cry out to you, "Violence!" Yet you do not save. Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, and you cannot look on wickedness with favor. Why do you look with favor on those who deal treacherously? Why are you silent when the wicked swallow up those more righteous than they?

It is far easier for us to understand God's actions than for the prophet. We understand that God has several traits, one of which is his purity or holiness as the prophet notes. God is also a just God, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. Neither the Jewish people nor any other people have any righteousness apart from their Savior. Judah is a covenant people of God. Judah, like their brothers in Israel, did not hold up their end of their covenant with God. In such cases, when they have wandered too far from him, God will remove them from their land of inheritance in judgment. In other words, he will use the treacherous to bring judgment against people who belong to him. When they say we are more righteous than they are, Jesus would reply, to take the log from their own eye, so that you can see clearly to remove the spec from another's eye. God can, and does bring judgment who violate him.

Daily Prayer: Lord, life is much better living under the covenant of grace, instead of a covenant of works. If it were not for the work of Jesus on the cross, nobody would be saved and men were be separated from the God. Now, because of the righteousness of Christ, we can be justified by faith in Jesus, who loves and and laid his life down for us. I pray this in his holy name Amen.
