Nahum 1 2-8, 14. God is against his enemies & the enemies of his people:

A jealous and avenging God is the Lord; he is avenging and wrathful. The Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries, and reserves wrath for his enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. In a whirlwind the storm is his way, and clouds are the dust beneath his feet. The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. He knows those who take refuge in him, but with an overflowing flood, he will make a complete end of its site and he will pursue his enemies into darkness. The Lord has issued a command concerning you: "Your name will no longer be perpetuated. I will cut off idol and image from the house of your gods. I will prepare your grave, for you are contemptible."

Nineveh was the capital of the world power Assyria. It was to them that Jonah preached and they repented. Later on, they became a strong world power and were known for their cruelty to their adversaries. In 722 BC, they took the northern kingdom of Israel into captivity and Israel's history for these tribes ended. God has now made it know that he will utterly destroy them because he is a God of vengeance, wrath, and he will not leave the guilty unpunished.

Daily Prayer: Holy Father, I need to study Nahum to learn more about your character and will.
This is not for ancient times alone, because you are a God who does not change. Let me learn and take to heart these hard learned lessons and be one for whom You are my stronghold and strength. In your name I pray Amen.
