Give us this day our daily bread (Exodus 16: 4)

The LORD said to Moses, "I will send bread down from heaven like rain. Each day the people can go out and gather only enough for that day. That's how I will see if they obey me.

Tha manna which is a form of sweet bread not only alleviates the people's hunger; they are, above all, a sign of the triple presence of God: the Lord who brought them out of Egypt is not going to abondom them; he manifests his glory by dominating nature; he has not brought them out to die, but to make sure that they survive in spite of difficulties. The Israelites complaining shows the people's lack of faith and hope, and by contrast, God is faithful to them to meet their need. This situation of the manna from heaven was used in the New Testament when Jesus taught the disciples to pray for their daily bread. God doesn't want to give more than our needs because it creates greed among God's people instead of trust in their Lord.

Daily Prayer: Lord you are faithful as you meet our every need even when we fail to ask from you. Your faithfulness is more than bread, but it is shelter, clothing, health and family.
Let us learn to observe all that you do so that we can come to you with thankful hearts. Amen.
