Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus Teaches About Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."

Jesus explains that if seasoning has no flavor, it has lost its value and is worthless. It Christians make no effort to influence the world around them, they are of little value to God. If we blend with the world we are not fulfilling our call but instead we should have a positive influence on those around us just like seasoning brings out the best flavor of the food. We are like a city on a hill - there is no where to hide it. If we live for Christ, we will be like a light that can be seen for miles. Our light dims when we are quiet when we should speak; when we go along with the crowd; when we deny the light; or when we do not explain our light to others.

Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, let my light so shine before others so that it draws other people to you and glorifies my Father in heaven. Amen.
