Matthew 4: 5-7 "You shall not tempt God"

Then the devil takes him up into the holy city, and sets him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

The temple was the highest building in Palestine and the place where the coming Messiah was to come. Satan used Scripture in his argument to try to lead Jesus to do something that is wrong. Here we see that Jesus Christ who is the Incarnate Word, used the written word to set Satan in his place. God is not a magician in the sky ready to perform at the request of Satan. Jesus came back to the Law (Deuteronomy 6:16) which says, "You shall not tempt the Lord your God." Instead, it is God's desire that we come to him by faith, and not by magic. It was said of Abraham that he was declared righteous, because he believed God.

Daily Prayer: Father, it seems people cannot believe unless you draw near to them. With my heart and my words, I proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sometimes it falls on fertile soil, but many times it falls on soil that is full of stones and has a hard time to grow. This year bless my labor by Your Spirit. Impart new life on the hearers of the gospel so that they may believe and therefore live. In Jesus name and for his sake I pray Amen.
