Matthew 4: 1-4 the Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’”

One of the first things that Jesus did in his earthly ministry is to come under the temptation in the wilderness by Satan. He did this as verification that he is indeed the Son of God and the Son of Man. Every other human being who has been tempted in a time of wanting (in the desert) has given in to it. The reason that Jesus did not fail is because he was not born with a sin nature. What Satan did not realize that that there is no sin in the person of Jesus. He would have to had gone outside of his created order to fall, but because he is the incarnate word of God, the word of God is what he responds to which is man does not live by bread alone. In other words, to Jesus it didn’t matter so much what the gift is (in this case bread), but what did matter is who is giving it. Blessing can only come forth from the Father, and apart from him there is no blessing.

Daily Prayer: Father, by the work of the Holy Spirit that dwells within me, keep me strong by faith when temptation comes. Like Jesus before me, let your word be drawn to my mind when the tempter comes, so that I can celebrate your victory by overcoming it. In Jesus name I pray Amen.
