Matthew 26:40-41 Sleeping Disciples

And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

We recall that over and over again, Jesus foretold his fate of being turned over to the hands of sinful men to be put to death and to be raised on the third day. In this scene, Jesus’ hour has drawn near and He takes with Him the three foremost of the disciples who are Peter, James, and John to be with Him in the Garden of Gethsemane and He has instructed them to watch and wait. With all this preparation, they were found sleeping. Why? Because they tried to fulfill their charge in the flesh, that is apart from the Spirit. We cannot blame them, because we are no different. The Bible tells us to walk by the Spirit, so that you do not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Once Jesus raises from the dead and descends to heaven, He will send His disciples and followers the Spirit of Truth who will not only be with them, but in them. This is the power Jesus gives us also. If you believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit indwells you to give you the power to live successful this side of heaven.

Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for the salvation you offered believers through your work on the cross. Thank you also for sending the Holy Spirit to give us the necessary power to continue your earthly labor and to help us more closely model you. In Your Holy Name I pray Amen.
