“Simon, Simon,
behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your
faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your
brothers.” But he
said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!”
And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today
until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
Based on these verses, one can say it was
not Christ’s will that Peter would stumble.
But even though He prays for Peter, it seems He is praying mostly for
Peter’s rebound from falling. I say this
because our Lord says, “Once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” This is very similar to what Jesus says to
Peter personally when the meet after Christ’s resurrection where Jesus tells
Peter, “Feed my sheep.” It is a
statement that Jesus knows Peter will fall, but the condition will not last and
Peter will come back to his Lord and serve Him.
Daily
Prayer: Lord, many of us are like Peter
and stumble in our faith. We get caught
up, especially when sin hinders us and for a time, become separated from
you. But like Peter, when this condition
arises, let us rebound in our faith and be drawn to You once again. In Your holy name I pray Amen.
