Luke 18:31-34 Things To Come

Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.  For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon,  and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again.”  But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.
Much earlier in Luke’s Gospel, we made the point that this gospel has a geographic orientation to it.  The book begins in Galilee and ultimately Jesus sets His face like flint towards Jerusalem, because He knew He was going their to complete the work of salvation by way of the Cross.  In these verses today, Jesus says by way of reminder that He is going to Jerusalem, He will be delivered over to the hands of the gentiles where He will be scourged and broken.  Yet despite everything, the disciples did not understand nor question what He was warning them of and their minds were closed about the things to come.
Daily Prayer:  Christ Jesus, my mind is closed in much the same way as with the disciples.  I live in the world and all that is possible with you doesn’t always make sense to me.  Bring me to a place of understanding so that it affects the life I live in my wait for Your return.  In Your holy name I pray Amen.
