Someone in the crowd
said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance
with me.” But He
said to him, “Man, who appointed Me a judge or arbitrator over you?” Then He said to
them, “Beware, and be on your
guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an
abundance does his life consist of his possessions.”
There are
several instances in the Bible where someone comes to Jesus and asks for Him to
speak up against his family member or neighbor.
When Jesus visited the home of Mary and Martha, Martha spoke up against
her sister for not helping with the household chores. Other times, the
Pharisees who are the religious sect spoke up against “sinners” asking Jesus
not to dine with such as these. In today’s
message, Jesus is asked to intervene between two brothers concerning the family
treasury. Jesus will rarely involve
Himself between people where the topic is worldly chores or treasure. Jesus’ message is the Kingdom of Heaven
and His mission is leading people to it.
In His Kingdom, those who are first will be last and all are encouraged
to seek ye first the Kingdom
of God and His
righteousness. In Christ’s world, one must pick up your cross daily and follow
Him if you want to be His disciple. One
must leave father and mother, sister, and brother if you wanted to be counted
as His disciple because whoever does not follow in such a way, is not worthy of
their Savior.
Daily
Prayer: Lord Jesus, the subject is one
of possessions. Because of Your work on
the Cross, You have delivered over to me and all who declare You as Savior, the
possession of eternal life. That
possession is not a future blessing, but a present one where we can live our
life even now by the grace You have prepared for all who love You. In Your holy
name I pray Amen.
