Now
as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha
welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister called Mary, who was seated
at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. But Martha was distracted with all her
preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care
that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help
me.” But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered
about so many things; but only one thing is necessary,
for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
So
often, we spend all of our energy on things that are only temporary and neglect
those things that are everlasting. The
Bible teaches us that heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word of God will
not pass away. Just think how we spend
our Christmas Season. Do we spend it
with family time in the Word of God, or do we concern ourselves with things
that don’t matter in the end. Even
Christian get carried away with the temporal neglecting those things that by
their nature will last and lead to life eternal. In today’s reading, Martha started off right
by welcoming in the Son of God. She knows who Jesus is and believes in
Him. But her own words convict her when she
requests that Mary concentrate on the chores and not the Son of God who visits
them.
Daily
Prayer: Lord Jesus, we too spend our
time on many things, but only one thing matters. What matters is our life found in You,
because You are the Bread of Life and whoever partakes of it will never die,
but will live and reign with You forever.
Train and convince our minds of this reality so that we may walk with
You as lovers of the truth. In Jesus
name I pray Amen.
