When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax came to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?” He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or poll-tax, from their sons or from strangers?” When Peter said, “From strangers,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are exempt. However, so that we do not offend them, go to the sea and throw in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for you and Me.”
On another occasion, Jesus had told the Pharisees that they should “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesars, but render unto God that which is God’s.” Avoiding any strife which involves pointing out that all things are God’s, Jesus causes compliance with municipal law by paying the taxes which is sought.
Daily Prayer: Father, it is necessary that I and all people should trust You in all things. Nothing is difficult for You and in You, all things are possible. Protect me in the same way You did for Peter. Cause all things to come together for good for those who love You and are called by You. Also protect us from all accusers, especially Satan. In Your holy name I pray Amen.
