When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This place is desolate and the hour is already late; so send the crowds away, that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat!” They said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.” And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” Ordering the people to sit down on the grass, He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up toward heaven, He blessed the food, and breaking the loaves He gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds, and they all ate and were satisfied. They picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve full baskets. There were about five thousand men who ate, besides women and children.
Previously we have said that whatever wonders appear in the Old Testament, Jesus renews in the New Testament. Just as the Jews were found without food in the wilderness on their trip from Egypt to the Promised Land, God supernaturally supplied bread from heaven called manna and it was more than sufficient to satisfy. In the same way, Jesus is the Son of God and he took what little bread he found in front of him, and after praying over it, his disciples distributed to the people and had several baskets left over. And Jesus doesn’t stop fulfilling our needs today, but we must do as Jesus did, and pray over what he has given us so that he may multiply that which we have.
Daily Prayer: Jesus, your grace is sufficient for me. Multiply you good hand in my life and in the life of my loved ones. Satisfy us not with rewards of the flesh, but rewards for our total being, because we do not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Amen.
