When Jesus had finished these parables, He departed from there. He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And His sisters are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.
If a person were only to take one thing to hold onto from Jesus’ teaching it would be that to enter the Kingdom of God, one must believe in him and have faith in Him alone. Jesus said to his own disciple Thomas, “Blessed are you Thomas who see and believer, but more blessed are those who haven’t seen, yet believe.” Jesus doesn’t want to be apologized for. He desires for us to be proud of him and grateful to him for caring so much for us that he was willing to die in our place for the forgiveness of sin. Yet when he goes to his own home town, they are offended by him and treat him as less than a prophet, much less the Son of God. He did not try to prove himself to them, but instead withdrew his might from among his people, because he came unto his kingdom, and his people did not receive him.
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I am thankful for the belief you have place in my heart. Humans are born faithless and unless they receive it from you, they have no faith. Bring me into the company of fertile hearts so that the gospel may be planted in them and they proper with faith even 30, 60, or 100 fold. In Your holy name I pray Amen.
