And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? For what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
What will a man give in exchange for his soul? This is a very weighty question. Jesus is saying that unless you follow Him even through hardship and sacrifice, you will indeed be forfeiting your soul. Why, you may ask? Because Jesus, the eternal Son of God is the only One who can save it. He loves you and will save it if you also love Him and honor him. But woe to the person who is ashamed of Jesus Christ on the Cross! If there is any time you don’t need to hear woe is to you, it is from Jesus of Nazareth. This is because if you try to preserve your very life and life everlasting, you will squander it if you deny Him.
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, unto you I commitment my spirit. Jesus, I trust in You and You alone with my soul because nobody comes to the Father, except through You. Amen.
