James 3:5-10 the tongue is like fire

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words are able to kill me! The natural man is totally selfish and his heart is proud. So are we when we come into the world. We choose our words to heighten ourselves and to humble others. We become very good at triming the tree of life with the words we choose. No wonder a man must be born again to inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. Our inheritance from God himself is the Words he has given us. This is why we must search out the Scriptures before we speak, because in them is the Word of God.

Daily Prayer: Father, my call in life is to repeat your words, not proclaim any new word of my own. Let me glorify you with your work, neither taking anything from them or adding anything new. Instead let me offer your word in which life is found. In your holy name I pray Amen.
