My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.
The apostle uses the term "propitiation" to describe the work of Christ Jesus. This means that he chose to take our place for the due punishment of our sins. In is a substitutionary atonement by which we are saved. In the Old Testament the Jewish people slaughtered animals to "cover their sins." In the New Covenant, we rely on the blood of Christ to "forgive" our sins. This is the grounds for our justification before Father God. Our sins are washed away and remembered no more. But is we deny our brother or our neighbor who we see with our own eyes, this is evidence that the love of God is not in this person and they have the need to repent and seek salvation so that they may be saved.
Daily Prayer: Father, it seems so reasonable that men and women should join you at your throne, because of the grace offered to us through your son. Let our hearts be pricked with this truth daily, so that we do not think more highly of ourselves than we ought. In Jesus name I pray Amen.
