When He entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to Him while He was teaching, and said, “By what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?” Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one thing, which if you tell Me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John was from what source, from heaven or from men?” And they began reasoning among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.” And answering Jesus, they said, “We do not know.” He also said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness by Satan, Satan asked Jesus to turn the stones into bread. Jesus replied, “You shall not tempt the Lord Your God.” It can be said that these “tempters” who are the Chief Priests and the Pharisees are the children of Satan, and not of God, because they follow the pattern of their father and become ones who tempt. Because Jesus is likewise God, He knows the condition of their hearts and hides revelation to those who refuse to believe. This is why Jesus says “Unless your faith is greater than the Pharisees, you will by no way enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, fill me with the Holy Spirit so that in my days, I will be able to walk by faith and not by sight. Keep me from the judgment of others, but instead let me live my life as one who has visible faith in You and Your Kingdom. In your holy name I pray Amen.
