To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy andpeace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. As I urged you upon my departure for Macedonia, remain on at Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines, nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith. But the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to fruitless discussion, wanting to be teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
This letter is written to Timothy who was a Greek convert and close associate with him. He is a young man who Paul is placing in charge of his church at Ephesus. At this time, there were still many Jews trying to keep the Law of Moses, even though Jesus Christ had given true believers Christian liberty. Paul reminds Timothy that the law was made for the lawless, and not the righteous, and the goal of being a partaker in Jesus is that we attain the goal of our instruction which is loving with a pure heart and with by faith for which there are no laws. He wants for him to be steadfast in this and image himself after Jesus Christ and even Paul himself.
Daily Prayer: Father, transform me by Your Spirit to walk humbly before you in faith, because this is what you charge men and women to do with their lives. Also to be gentle and kind so that my life can be lived with a clear conscience. This I ask in Jesus name Amen.
