Colossians 1:24-29 The Church was a mystery until the ascension of Christ Jesus
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and fill up on my part that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the assembly; of which I was made a servant, according to the stewardship of God which was given me toward you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden for ages and generations. But now it has been revealed to his saints to whom God was pleased to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory; whom we proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus; for which I also labor, striving according to his working, which works in me mightily.
Until the ascension of Christ, the church was a mystery. Throughout the gospels, we hear the Hebrews wrongly proclaim a righteousness because they are a seed of Abraham. Jesus corrects them by saying he could make followers out of stones and that the Hebrew should not depend on his ancestry for righteousness. Fifty days after Christ's ascension, a one time event occurs - the sending of the Holy Spirit - thus the birth of the church. The work of the Holy Spirit was to indwell believers thus making their bodies the temple of God. Shortly thereafter, the Romans destroyed the Jewish Temple so that one stone could not be put upon another. It also defines graphically what the prophets have said all along - salvation can be only found in the Messiah, the servant and the Son of God.
