Now Thomas (also known as Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”But he said to them, “Unless I see the
nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put
my hand into his side, I will not believe.” A
week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with
them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and
said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
This is the challenge of the New Testament Church, which is to place our souls into the hands of our Savior who we have never seen. Some people are more able to do this than others. Some are so reliant upon themselves alone they exclude Jesus as Savior, because they treat themselves as their own savior. Others have observed and rightly judged their sinful condition and understand that they are a sinner in need of a Savior. This one is the one that Jesus declares is blessed. Though they haven't seen, yet they believe.
Daily Prayer: Lord, bless each of us with sufficient faith so that we can believe. Let us not trust the sinful and self centered hands of any man, but instead let us trust in You who is the beginning and the end in whom no power is lacking. In Your holy name I pray Amen.
