Matthew 26:39 Jesus' First Prayer

And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.”

This plea demonstrates the height of Jesus’ humanity. He comes to His Father privately asking if there is any way His mission of human redemption could be satisfied apart from the cross. From Jesus childhood, he was about his father’s business. Jesus would not leave his father’s kingdom and come to earth apart from fully satisfying the Father. So he states, not my will, but thy will be done. Surely when he began his earthly ministry, he was inspired. But now, he is sad and tired. He desires not to drink the cup of poison and feel it burn him. After all, he has tried for a long three years which seemed even longer. So he surrenders to the will of the Father and allows himself to be delivered into sinful hands and be crushed.

Daily Prayer: Father, we are told that it pleased You for Jesus to be offered up. Pleased not in a happy way, but in a way that satisfies to penalty for mankind’s sinfulness. In the world, nothing comes without a cost, and Jesus paid the cost for all who come to You through Him. In Jesus name I pray Amen.
