When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, "Go take to yourself a wife of harlotry and have children of harlotry; for the land commits flagrant harlotry, forsaking the Lord."
So he went and took Gomer, and she conceived and bore him a son whose name was Jezreel (which means God sows). He said, "In a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the bloodshed of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the Kingdom of the House of Israel. Then she conceived again and gave birth to a daughter whose name was Loruhaman (which means she has not obtained compassion). Later she conceived again and had a son whose name is Lo-ammi (which means not my people). "The sons of Judah and of Israel will gather together and they shall go up from the land, because great will be the Day of Jezreel."
In these passages, God is using his representative Hosea to bring to the attention to the Israelites that they have not been faithful the the covenant and to their God. Their lack of love for God was so great that he is saying that he will remove them from the land and the inheritance given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Hosea lives out before the people their adultress ways which lead to judgment.
Daily Prayer: Lord, we don't appreciate the faithfulness that you bring every day. Sin has drawn us to place ourselves ahead of the Lord of the universe. Now that we have forgot our Creator, we must surly bear the consequences. Give us wisdom to learn from our mistakes and place you ahead of all things. In your holy name I pray Amen.
